The Australia Day (26th January 2021) meeting at Warwick Farm saw a great day at the races for Mark Newnham Racing, this time taking out another consecutive race double.

Marway AKA the Rockhampton Rocket provided the first win in race 5 when taking out the Vinery Stud Handicap over 1000m. Ridden superbly by jockey Rachel King he jumped well from barrier 2, racing a little fiercely at first but still maintaining his spot hugging the fence, in about third or second position behind the leader. At the turn when an inside run presented itself, he happily took it. Scooting up the fence to find victory in his first city start. Congratulations to his very patient owners, the Sturgiss and Wagner families. Marway is such a talented horse with a lot more success to come.

The next winner came in the feature race the Australia Day Cup over 2400m, with the beautiful Skymax grabbing the honours. He jumped from barrier 4 to settle much worse than mid-field with Wolfe taking up the lead. He loped along until the half-way mark when a bold move by jockey Robbie Dolan saw him loop the field to take up the lead, which Wolfe obligingly handed up. With the two race favourites running first and second for the remainder, when at the 200m mark Wolfe came back to seriously contest for the lead. The two imports fought it out to the line with Skymax being able to hold the challenger at bay, resulting in the hard-fought win. Skymax showing a hardened gritty side that is in direct contrast to his demeanour at home. Congratulations to Bermuda Racing and all the connections, it was truly a great win to watch.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone connected to our two winners, making it another great day for the Stable.
