Mark Newnham

The regard for Mark Newnham in the racing industry led him to become an inaugural winner of the Godolphin Award for Excellence in Racing for his efforts in the sport.

Mark progressed from a strapper with Bob Thomsen at 15 to become a key part in three Golden Slipper winners as part of the legendary Tulloch Lodge operation of Gai Waterhouse.

Newnham started out with Thomsen before accepting a job as a travelling foreman for another Australian racing immortal, the great Bart Cummings, who entrusted Mark with his superstars of the 1980s such as Campaign King, Beau Zam, Tristanagh, Sky Chase and Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule.

Mark extended his experience on what was supposed to be a working holiday but quickly became a career-defining time when riding out for brilliant British trainer Clive Brittain and Irish master Kevin Prendergast, which lit a fire in Newnham.

Weights had risen in Australia, which led Newnham to start a jockeys’ apprenticeship before starting his wonderful period working with Waterhouse.

Mark rode his first winner for Gai in February 1997 and, fittingly, he steered his last winner to victory for Waterhouse at Kembla Grange in September 2011.

The relationship with Tulloch Lodge produced more than 300 winners and helped Mark to three Kembla Grange riding premierships as well as the Bill Wade Medal at Newcastle.

Newnham also had stints riding in Macau and Korea but his career shifted off the track, accompanying Waterhouse to yearling sales and working full-time with the champion trainer.

Newnham rode the brilliant colt Pierro in nearly all his work and did much of the build-up work with Fiorente in the lead-up to his 2013 Melbourne Cup win.

The natural progress of Mark’s career led him to take out his own trainer’s licence early in 2016, putting more than 30 years’ experience and the knowledge working closely with some of the world’s greatest racing names provides.

Mark has secured boxes at the world-class training centre at Warwick Farm but will soon have the scope to expand his numbers.

Mark has also been granted 24-boxes at Royal Randwick Racecourse in mid-2017.

Newnham’s patient and methodical approach to every horse gets results.
