The Horse’s Birthday today and the first day of the 2020/2021 Racing Season, 1st August 2020 and Apprentice Jockey Tom Sherry lands his first city winner at Royal Randwick with the newly turned 4-year-old mare, Fulmina (Snitzel/Inchita).

Track was rated a Heavy 9, but this time she was up against her own sex in a race held for  Fillies and Mares, the ATC Thank You Trainers Handicap over 1800m. Ridden masterfully by Tom, she jumped well from barrier 4 but she didn’t get caught up in the rush upfront to lead. Instead Tom elected to let her settle mid field, kept her relaxed and let her find her rhythm. That is until the swing of the corner, turning for home she came wide and into the clear. At the 200m mark she unleashed, coming away from them for a strong and dominant win late.

It was a very proud moment for Irish-born Tom and his family, as this deserved young man chalked up his first metropolitan win after a frustrating couple of weeks. I’m sure it is the first of many City wins to come for the talented young hoop.

Congratulations to David Murray too of Lyndcote Racing and sincere thanks for entrusting the stable with this well-bred mare. May we have many more wins together next preparation as Fulmina goes for a well-earned rest.
